Goobertown, AR
I can't speak for Glen, but I haven't had much riding time other than the daily commute to work and back. I did however take advantage of the past weekend, starting off with the brisk upper 40's morning and turning into a beautiful day at about 77.
The ride was planned by one of the Central Arkansas HOG Chapter members for his birthday. He wanted a picture in front of the Goobertown sign, just North of Jonesboro.
Meeting up at the Rock City Harley Dealer, we headed out. Jumping on Interstate 30 to 440 and off to HWY 70.
HWY 70 is a straight shot to rice fields and farmland. Other than the bumpy old roadway, you are just cruising, following the crowd, and trying to find something interesting to look at. Our first stop was a De Valls Bluff, at Break Time gas station. Quick fill up for the smaller bikes, restroom break, and a leg stretch. My GPS game Ingress had a few portals nearby and my travel companion Zak's (son) game Pokemon also had some items. These games make for a good time waster, and leg stretcher. Pulling into a gas station, I personally didn't see much, but the game drew my attention to a historical marker for the Memphis and Little Rock Railroad. The abandoned building next to it was labeled as the old Depot.
After the short break, it is back on 70 to just outside of Forrest City and North on HWY 1. We then made a quick stop in Colt, AR for another stretch.
From Colt, we headed East on HWY 306 to North 284 and the outskirts of Village Creek State Park. HWY 284 had some much needed curves for the ride! I personally could have ridden it a couple more times for good measure, but we had a deadline. From 284 we hit HWY 64 Business and over to HWY 163 and kept North to Jonesboro. While in Jonesboro we stopped at Fat City Grill for some much needed lunch on HWY 49/ Red Wolf Blvd. Map to right.
After lunch it should have been nap time, instead we traveled a couple minutes North where his family had the Sonic ready for his cake and ice cream. This was the nail in the coffin!
We then proceeded to Goobertown. Now I did a little research prior to traveling and Goobertown does indeed pull up a location on Google Maps but it says it is located in Brookland Township. But to my surprise upon entering the township the sign does indeed read Goobertown. If you do a Google Search for Goobertown you will come across the Wiki and notice, there is not much info about it. It is however noted for its "unusual place name". It is also mentioned in RoadsideAmerica.com.
From this point, it was quite a long day's ride, being the first of the year and there hasn't been any building up. So a couple of us called it a day and continued up HWY 49 to Paragould and headed West on HWY 412 to Walnut Ridge tying us in to 67/167. From 67 it is a straight shot back to Little Rock, with a quick stop for gas at Bald Knob.
All in all it turned out to be a nice little ride, and I learned about a new place in Arkansas!
