Road Debris
It has been to long since my last post and quite a bit has happened. March 6th was a beautiful Arkansas afternoon. On my commute home traveling southbound on I-430 a car from the center lane kicked up a piece of plywood. The piece came and went so fast, I'm estimating it about 2' or 3' wide and about 2' tall in a half moon shape. As the piece came up there was little to do than hang on. It traveled from right to left hitting the windshield on the left side and then making contact with the handlebar and my knee. At the time only my left hand was hurting. I dropped my speed and was still trying to figure out what happened. Looking down to the controls I notice that the assembly had been bumped almost an 1" from where it should be.
I was unsure at this time wither I could pull the clutch back because of my hand and the damages. Since Rock City Harley was at the end of I-430 I figured I would just keep going and figure it out when I got closer.
The moment of truth was upon me as I was coming up on the exit. As I go to pull in the clutch it just barely engages as it makes contact with the controls. But it was enough to shift smoothly. I managed to pull up in the service dept. and as I got off I found some evidence.
The service guy looked at me in almost disbelief until he laughed and pointed at the debris in my seat. Looking closer there were still pieces in the cables and blinker.
After the insurance quote, we were looking at about $3,300 in repairs. All this for something someone didn't tie down.
It has been almost nine weeks and I got my last piece, the windshield. I still have some pain in my hand and the Dr has scheduled an MRI to see if it is broke. FYI, it isn't stopping me from riding!
Yesterday Zak and I picked out our helmets. He had been borrowing a full face, bluetooth, modular one that I hardly ever wore. And to top that off we also received our Sena 30k helmet headsets. After hearing that there were some quick and easy earpiece holders that would allow the Sena 30k work with a half helmet, we couldn't pass it up. I should be able to pick up my new helmet tomorrow and hopefully will get the headset installed on mine. I will post some pics and updates on it.
Things are slowly getting checked off our list for the trip. I also received a good tip to leave the leathers and just use rain gear. It provides all the wind blocking and packs much smaller.
And if you are interested in helping fund us donations can be made here GoFundMe to raise some money for this endeavor.
